Michelin unveils Nazca, a machine to automate retreading of heavy-duty tires
The Clermont-based group has presented a solution designed to automate the retreading of heavy-duty, bus and coach tires, a process previously carried out manually in workshops.
This innovation is part of the multi-life model claimed by the manufacturer, which combines retreading and recapping.
A workshop process automated by laser scanning and algorithms
Michelin has unveiled Nazca, a machine presented as an automated retreading solution designed for many brands and sizes of heavy-duty, bus and coach tires.
Developed by the group's engineering departments, the machine is based on high-density laser scanning and algorithms that adjust the cutting depth in real time across the entire circumference and width of the tire.
According to Michelin, the solution aims to automate an operation previously performed manually, while respecting manufacturers' recommendations, with an objective of quality and repeatability. Tested for over a year under real conditions, it could increase retreading capacity by 30% to 50% depending on workshop usage conditions, and requires less than three minutes of technician intervention per operation.

Around twenty Nazca machines are currently in pilot phase in Europe. The machine will be exhibited at Michelin's stand at IAA Transportation in Hanover from September 14 to 20, 2026.
In 2027, Michelin indicates its intention to continue the deployment of this innovation in different countries, taking into account applicable regulatory frameworks. The group specifies that the commercial launch will be gradual and adapted to the specificities of each market.
With Nazca, Michelin states it is strengthening its multi-life model, based on retreading and recapping, which it presents as a way to extend tire life, reduce operating costs and limit environmental impact.
