Société Générale Stock Leads CAC 40, Mixed Analyst Views
Société Générale posts the best performance of the CAC 40 in mid-morning trading this Friday, as the stock rebounds sharply after testing its support level the previous day. Two analyst reports published today present contrasting views on the bank's valuation.
Leading the CAC 40 with a 2.71% Rebound, Stock Remains Below Its Moving Averages
Société Générale gains 2.71% to €71.76 in trading, recovering ground after approaching its support level at €69.87 during the previous session. However, this rebound is insufficient to reverse the underlying momentum: the stock remains below its 20-day moving average at €73.11 (down 1.85%) and, more significantly, its 50-day moving average at €76.82 (down 6.59%). Only the 200-day moving average, set at €71.99, is in contact with the current price, acting as an immediate floor.
The RSI at 35 indicates a territory close to oversold, following weeks of selling pressure: the bank has declined 5.13% over one month and 5.6% over three months, although on a one-year basis gains still reach 25.45%. The key resistance level remains anchored at €82.87, representing an approximately 15% gap from the current price.
Two Analyst Reports Published Friday: Targets Cut Despite Solid Fundamentals
On Friday, two firms revised their analyst opinions on the stock. KBW slightly lowers its target from €81.00 to €80.00 while maintaining a favorable view (outperform), leaving upside potential of approximately 11% from the current price. Alphavalue takes a more cautious stance, reducing its target from €80.60 to €78.40 with a "reduce" rating. These two revisions follow in the wake of the strategic plan unveiled on September 21, which had prompted several bullish revisions in subsequent sessions. From a fundamental perspective, first-half 2026 results, published on July 30, showed group net income of €3.5 billion, up 13.9%, with the 2026 ROTE target raised to approximately 11%.
The stock is currently trading at around 9 times expected earnings for the current fiscal year, according to the consensus of surveyed analysts. Additionally, the €1.5 billion share buyback program announced in August was approximately 69% executed by September 18, providing structural support to the stock. In a context where the dollar remains at a two-month high and markets price in an increased probability of Fed rate hikes in October, Société Générale's historical sensitivity to credit rates remains a parameter to monitor. The support at €69.87 now constitutes the immediate reference threshold for the session.
