Thales Selected by Danish Defence for RSM NG Radar at Faroe Islands
The new equipment will replace a Thales RSM 970 radar in service and will serve both military aviation and civil aviation. Although acquired by a military authority, it must be connected to the air navigation service provider systems in the area.
A Temporary RSM NG Radar for the Sornfelli Site
Thales has been selected by DALO, the Danish Acquisition and Logistics Organisation of the Ministry of Defence, to supply and deploy a temporary RSM NG surveillance radar. The installation is scheduled for the Sornfelli site in the Faroe Islands.
The radar will be connected to the AVIANS control centre. System integration will be provided by Naviair and AVIANS, which will enable the equipment to also support civil air traffic operations.
Delivery and Installation in Six Months Without Service Interruption
Thales indicated that it would complete delivery and installation within six months, without interruption to air traffic control services. The group presents this timeline as one of the shortest schedules achieved for a programme of this scale.
From a technical standpoint, the system complies with ICAO and EUROCONTROL standards. The RSM NG integrates Mode S interrogation and ADS-B detection capabilities. Thales describes it as the latest evolution of its secondary radar range.
Continuity of Surveillance in the North Atlantic Highlighted
On the client side, Colonel Thomas Pedersen, Head of the Air and Space Division of the FMI, emphasised the stakes of the transition: "The strategic position of the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic makes it essential to maintain a reliable and stable image of airspace during this modernisation. Thanks to this solution, we guarantee continuity of surveillance without disrupting air traffic".
For Thales, Lionel de Castellane, Vice President of the Air Traffic Control Radar segment, discussed the improvement of airspace safety and operational resilience in the North Atlantic region, alongside DALO, Naviair and AVIANS.
