Waga Energy Secures 20-Year Contract in North Carolina
Waga Energy has won a tender issued by Randolph County in North Carolina to build, own, and operate a renewable natural gas (RNG) production unit at the Great Oak landfill site. The agreement, signed on Tuesday, spans two decades.
A Multi-Year Contract for Biogas Upgrading in North Carolina
Randolph County and Waga Energy announce the signing of a long-term agreement concerning the development, construction, and operation of a renewable natural gas production unit at the Great Oak landfill, located in Randleman, North Carolina. The contract extends over 20 years. Waga Energy will finance, build, own, and operate the facility. The unit, initially sized at 3,000 cubic feet per minute (scfm), or about 4,800 m³/h, will utilize the Wagabox technology developed and patented by Waga Energy. This technology combines membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation to convert landfill biogas into pipeline-grade renewable natural gas.
Annual Production of 610,000 MMBtu and a Reduction of 47,500 Tons of CO₂
The unit will produce approximately 610,000 MMBtu (179 GWh) of renewable natural gas annually, which will be injected into the local gas network. The project is expected to prevent about 47,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by replacing fossil fuels, equivalent to the emissions produced by the consumption of 4.2 million gallons of diesel. Waga Energy also commits to investing in the biogas collection and control system to maximize recovery while reducing local emissions. The Great Oak landfill, owned by Randolph County and operated by Waste Management of Carolinas, Inc., accepted 692,255 tons of waste last year.
Waga Energy Operates 36 Units and Has 21 Under Construction Globally
Waga Energy currently operates 36 renewable natural gas production units in France, Spain, Canada, and the United States, representing an installed capacity exceeding 6.5 million MMBtu (1.9 TWh) per year. The company has an additional 21 units under construction worldwide. The Randolph County contract follows a competitive selection process initiated by the county in 2025.
