Airbus Signs with OCCAR to Transform the A400M into a Combat Platform

A Development Contract with the French DGA

Airbus Defence and Space has signed a contract with OCCAR, acting on behalf of the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), to develop new capabilities for the A400M. This program, named 'Parallel Mission System' (PMS), aims to equip the French A400Ms with multi-mission functionalities in the fields of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The agreement covers the integration of a new mission system, tactical situation handling consoles installed in the cargo hold to monitor and control various sensors, as well as the integration of an optronic sensor. The system is designed to integrate additional sensors and communication means, and also to manage drones and missiles launched from the aircraft's cargo hold.

First Equipment in 2027, Flight Tests in 2028

Following a development phase, the new equipment will be installed on board the first French A400M in 2027 and tested in flight in 2028. This will be followed by the retrofit of a number of aircraft in the Air and Space Army's fleet to accommodate the PMS kit. Eventually, the crew will be able to coordinate collaborative combat missions involving ground troops, helicopters (including Tigre and Caracal H225M), and fighter jets. The A400M will thus become a tactical air command and control (C2) tool.

Other Evolutions Under Study for the A400M

Airbus Defence and Space is already exploring the development of other capabilities for the A400M, including long-range jamming, a mother ship function for in-flight dropping of drones and missiles, an increase in payload capacity to 40 tons, and firefighting capabilities. These developments aim to broaden the spectrum of the aircraft's missions to meet the needs of the armed forces.
