ArcelorMittal Defends Its Position in Dispute with Acciaierie d'Italia
ArcelorMittal was legally summoned last Thursday by the extraordinary commissioners of Acciaierie d'Italia at the Milan court. The steel group vehemently denies the accusations made against it and announces that it will vigorously defend its position.
Denial of Allegations
ArcelorMittal states that there is 'no factual or legal basis' for the lawsuit filed. The group categorically rejects all the allegations contained in the legal action, particularly those claiming that it encouraged the company's leaders and local management to engage in mismanagement as part of a strategy of 'destruction' of operations and 'extortion' of profits outside Italy. According to the lawsuit, the alleged damages exceed 7 billion euros.
Operational Context and Investments
ArcelorMittal recalls that since 2021, the Acciaierie d'Italia group has been operated under joint and equal control with Invitalia, an entity controlled by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, designated to implement a public-private partnership. The group claims to have invested approximately 2 billion euros to rehabilitate the business, including a significant portion allocated to the environmental plan and compliance with the Integrated Environmental Authorization required by the Italian government. ArcelorMittal emphasizes that it operated in a context that became 'profoundly affected' by adverse actions and omissions on the part of Invitalia, Ilva, and the Italian government, notably the withdrawal in 2019 of the legal protections necessary to implement the environmental plan. The group holds several claims for damages, including an international arbitration initiated in June 2025 against the Republic of Italy for non-compliant expropriation, totaling over 1.8 billion euros.
