SES Extends Its Contract with the Australian Army Until 2033
The satellite communications operator SES has entered into a new agreement with the Australian Defence Forces to provide secure communications via the Intelsat 22 satellite for a minimum duration of 16 years, with extension options until 2041, according to the company's press release.
Strategic Satellite Repositioning and Infrastructure Enhancement
According to the press release, SES will reposition the IS-22 satellite to a new orbital location specified by the Australian Defence Force. The satellite, operational since its launch in 2012, is equipped with an ultra-high frequency military payload. The operator will also construct a dedicated ground segment, including a specially designed antenna facility on Australian territory, as indicated by the group. This infrastructure aims to ensure the continuity of operations for the coming years.

The UHF payload of the IS-22 satellite supports the national missions of the Australian Defence Force as well as joint operations with its allies, including the United States, the company specifies. According to SES, no other comparable UHF capacity is immediately available in the Indo-Pacific region. Philippe Glaesner, Senior Vice President of SES Global Government, emphasized in the press release that this agreement secures critical communication capacity for the ADF and its strategic partners in the region.
Meeting the Growing Demand for Secure Military Communications
According to the group, the sector is currently experiencing a significant increase in global demand for secure military satellite communications, particularly in UHF, where supply is extremely limited. By securing access to the capacities of the IS-22 satellite for the coming years, the Australian Defence Force not only maintains the continuity of its services but also a strategic advantage in command and control, secure mobility, and interoperability with its allies, the company asserts in its press release.
