Société Générale share declines 2%, under pressure ahead of central banks week

The bank headquartered in La Défense ended Monday, September 14 trading session in negative territory, within a CAC 40 itself oriented downward. The decline occurs in a particularly busy context for the financial sector, with a series of major monetary decisions expected this week in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

Société Générale share declines 2%, under pressure ahead of central banks week

A 2% decline that brings the security below both its short-term moving averages

The Société Générale share declines 2.02% to €73.21 at close, after ending the previous trading session (Friday, September 11) at €74.72. The security thus remains below its 20-day moving average at €75.35 (gap of -2.84%) and below its 50-day moving average at €77.25 (gap of -5.23%), two averages that have exerted persistent pressure for several weeks. The 200-day moving average, at €71.47, supports the price from below with a margin of 2.43%, so the technical support at €71.03 remains the next level to monitor in case the downward movement continues.

The RSI at 45 maintains itself in neutral territory, far from the oversold zones that marked the end of August. The configuration thus remains indecisive: no clear selling exhaustion, but no buying momentum either, within a CAC 40 that declines 0.89% in the session. Over one month, the pressure remains strong on the security with a decline of 11.66%, even though the one-year performance still stands solidly positive at nearly 28%.

The share is evolving in a particularly dense monetary environment this week. The Fed meets on Wednesday in a context where American inflation remains at 3.4% in August, with a probability of 85 to 90% of a Fed funds rate hike according to money markets. The Bank of Japan is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points on Friday, which would bring its rate to 1.25%, a level unseen for more than thirty years. The ECB, for its part, already raised its benchmark rates on September 10 by 25 basis points, bringing the deposit facility rate to 2.50%. For a bank like Société Générale, historically sensitive to credit rates for eurozone companies, this tightening of monetary conditions mechanically weighs on refinancing costs and net interest margins.

In this context, the results for the first half of 2026, published on July 30, nonetheless remained solid: a record net profit attributable to the Group of €3.5 billion, up 13.9% compared to H1-25, with a ROTE of 12.0%. The 2026 ROTE target had then been raised to approximately 11%, accompanied by an exceptional share buyback of €1.5 billion. On the basis of expected earnings, the security is trading at approximately 9.3 times the earnings of the current fiscal year and 8.1 times those of the following fiscal year, according to the consensus of surveyed analysts. The support at €71.03 remains the pivotal level to monitor should the month's decline intensify.
