Société Générale Stock Rebounds 2.5%, Leading the CAC 40
The bank headquartered in La Défense posts a sharp rebound this Thursday, in a context of an almost stable Parisian market at close. The movement comes as two major brokerage houses published opposing views on the stock yesterday, creating tension between bullish and neutral camps on the security.
A Rebound Occurring in a Sectorial Context Marked by Rising Sovereign Yields
Société Générale gains 2.58% to €74.38 at close, ranking among the strongest gains of the CAC 40, which itself closes nearly unchanged (+0.07%). The rebound takes place against a singular market backdrop: global sovereign yields continue their upward correction, with the 10-year British gilt approaching 5.27% (a peak since 2008) and the 10-year US Treasury nearing 4.8%, driven by surging oil prices linked to the resumption of military hostilities in the Gulf. For a bank whose interest income remains sensitive to credit rate developments, this context is not neutral: the 3-month Euribor stands at 2.51%, up 0.48 points over twelve months, and credit outstanding to French businesses is growing by 3.5% year-over-year to €1,485 billion. Over one year, the stock shows a gain of 41.68%, reflecting solid performance since 2025 lows.
Analyst Views in Opposite Directions and Technical Configuration Still Fragile Below Moving Averages
Yesterday, analyst views on the stock took a contradictory turn: Morgan Stanley raised its price target from €89 to €94, maintaining an overweight rating, while Goldman Sachs lowered its target from €90.75 to €80.50 while downgrading from buy to neutral. The stock, at €74.38, still trades at nearly a 21% discount to Morgan Stanley's high target, while Goldman Sachs' target leaves it only 8% upside potential. This divergence between two leading houses had fueled selling pressure in the previous session. On the technical side, today's rebound is insufficient to erase the deteriorated configuration: the price remains below the 20-day moving average at €78.16 (gap of -4.84%) and the 50-day moving average at €77.62, two levels that now constitute short-term resistance.
The RSI at 33 remains close to the oversold zone without having plunged into it decisively, which reflects partial exhaustion of selling pressure from recent sessions without an established reversal signal. The support level at €71.03 remains the reference to monitor in case of further decline. According to the consensus of analysts surveyed, the stock trades at approximately 9.3 times expected earnings for the current fiscal year.
