Société Générale Stock Rebounds but Remains Oversold, RSI at 24
The Défense bank is recovering this Friday, following the sharp correction of the previous day which had caused it to break through a key technical threshold downward. The rebound occurs in a CAC 40 up nearly 1%, against the backdrop of the VIX falling back to 14.47, signaling a globally calmer market.
A Technical Rebound That Does Not Offset Weekly and Monthly Deterioration
The Société Générale stock gains 1.37% to €72.00 during the session, after closing at €71.03 the previous day. This rebound remains modest given a difficult week: the stock is still down nearly 5.8% over seven days and nearly 7.8% over one month. The correction has brought the price well below the 20-day (€80.18) and 50-day (€78.00) moving averages, with respective gaps of 10.2% and 7.7%.
Only the 200-day MA, at €70.67, remains below the current price, offering support to the stock at this stage of the decline. The RSI, which fell to 24, signals a pronounced oversold configuration: at this level, selling pressure has intensified significantly over the past week, although a low RSI does not prejudge the direction ahead. The previously broken support level at €74.55, identified during Thursday's session, now sits above the price, transformed into nearby resistance.

Alphavalue lowered its price target on Wednesday, August 26 from €82.60 to €81.90, while maintaining its analyst opinion at "reduce". This target nevertheless comes out at more than 13% above the current price of €72.00, which illustrates the magnitude of the decline suffered since the multi-year high reached in early August. On the fundamental side, the bank had published on July 30 a record net profit of €3.5 billion in the first half of 2026, up 13.9%, accompanied by an increase in its annual targets: cost-to-income ratio targeted below 60% and ROTE increased to approximately 11%.
An interim dividend of €0.751 per share is expected to be paid on October 7, 2026, up 23% compared to the previous year. The stock trades at approximately 9 times expected earnings for the current fiscal year, according to the consensus of surveyed analysts. The technical resistance at €74.55, which has shifted from support to potential brake, constitutes the first level to break for the rebound to gain substance.
