Airbus A400M: Seven Countries Launch a Joint Multinational Fleet
On July 7, 2026, seven governments (Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom) announced the launch of a high-level initiative to establish a multinational fleet of Airbus A400M aircraft. This project is part of a resource-sharing strategy aimed at strengthening the strategic air transport capabilities of European allies.
A Project Based on Resource and Infrastructure Sharing
The initiative is based on a strategy of mutualization and sharing among the participating nations. It includes various levels of cooperation, from a jointly operated and owned A400M fleet to associated services such as maintenance, training, infrastructure, and supply. The goal is to create an integrated solution that meets both national and NATO needs, while enhancing operational flexibility in specific areas: air-to-air refueling, humanitarian aid, medical evacuation, and firefighting.
According to Airbus Defence and Space, the choice of the A400M highlights 'its key capabilities in strategic air transport'. The manufacturer notes that more than 135 aircraft are currently in operation and that the global fleet has logged over 270,000 flight hours. The A400M 'has become the backbone of air mobility for the largest European NATO member countries'.
The Project Draws Inspiration from the Success of the Multinational MRTT Program
This multinational initiative for the A400M is inspired by the success of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF), which has been operating the Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport since 2020. The MMF program grants nations the exclusive right to operate the NATO-owned A330 MRTT aircraft in a sharing arrangement, ensuring standardization, economic efficiency, and interoperability across the Atlantic.
The MMF has seen several deployments: its aircraft have been mobilized on NATO's eastern flank, supported civilian and refugee evacuations in Afghanistan, and participated in multinational exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.
Finland Joins the A330 MRTT Program
Finland has officially joined the Multinational MRTT Fleet alongside Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. The MMF now includes nine participating nations. Out of a total of 12 aircraft ordered, nine A330 MRTTs are currently in operation.
