Airbus Partners with Four German Entities for Military Intelligence Satellite
On Wednesday, Airbus Defence and Space signed a memorandum of understanding with Rohde & Schwarz, Constellr, Orbint, and High Performance Space Structure Systems (HPS) to develop a terrestrial observation and military intelligence satellite solution. Announced at the ILA Berlin Air Show, the partnership brings together five German specialists to establish a sovereign space surveillance capability, independent of non-European dependencies.
A Partnership Federating Five Complementary German Expertises
Led by Airbus as the system integrator and manager, the consortium includes players from distinct sectors: Rohde & Schwarz contributes its radiofrequency components and radar antenna systems; Constellr provides infrared thermal satellites; HPS supplies qualified deployable mesh reflectors for space; Orbint delivers geolocation methods and data processing algorithms. This modular architecture aims to cover the entire intelligence chain, from multisensor collection to the dissemination of operational services to government clients. All five companies are based in Germany, enhancing European industrial autonomy in this strategic sector. The collaboration is engaged on a non-exclusive basis.
Multimodal Surveillance and Multi-Sensor Intelligence
The solution integrates multiple types of sensors: radiofrequency systems, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), complemented by geospatial intelligence products from signal origin. This multimodal approach addresses operational gaps identified by European governments, particularly in infrared thermal detection, capable of revealing operational activity and the status of equipment that remains invisible to conventional optical and radar sensors. Airbus assumes overall responsibility for mission and system architecture, end-to-end integration, program management, and customer interface.
