Alstom: Order for 35 Additional Trains in Sweden, 80 in Total
The railway manufacturer based in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine announced the exercise by Swedish operator Västtrafik of an option provided for in an existing framework contract.
This order brings the total number of Avelia Stream Nordic trains intended to equip the regional network in western Sweden to 80.
35 Avelia Stream Nordic Units Added to a Fleet Totaling 80 Trains
Alstom has received an order for 35 additional Avelia Stream Nordic X80 trains from Västtrafik, through the exercise of an option provided for in the existing framework contract.
With this new order, Alstom will deliver a total of 80 trains to the Swedish operator. These trains are intended for the regional railway network of Västra Götaland, in western Sweden.
The option exercise follows the entry into service of the first Avelia Stream Nordic trains, which will be delivered in spring 2026 after several months of testing on the network.
An Option Valued at Approximately 350 Million Euros
The option exercised by Västtrafik is valued at approximately 350 million euros. According to the press release, this order will be recognized in the second quarter of Alstom's 2026/27 fiscal year.
Alstom also provides maintenance for Västtrafik's train fleet, which currently includes both new trains and previous-generation rolling stock. Additional fleet deliveries will continue over the coming years.
A High-Speed Train Adapted to Nordic Winter Conditions
The Avelia Stream Nordic reaches a maximum speed of 200 km/h and offers 270 seats distributed across three cars per train. It provides level boarding access, dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and strollers, as well as real-time information systems.
The train is designed to operate in 80 cm of snow and remain operational at temperatures as low as -40 °C. In 2025, the X80 model received the Red Dot Award. It is equipped with energy-efficient systems, including regenerative braking.
