Alstom Secures a €1.4 Billion Contract with Toronto

Details of the Agreement

The agreement between Alstom and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) involves the supply of 70 Metropolis subway trains, each consisting of six cars, according to the company. The deal is valued at 2.3 billion Canadian dollars, approximately €1.4 billion. Of the 70 trains ordered, 55 are intended to replace aging equipment on Toronto's Line 2 subway. The remaining 15 trains will be allocated to extension projects of Line 1 towards Yonge North and Line 2 towards Scarborough, the statement details. The contract includes options for up to 150 additional trains, depending on the future needs of the operator. The new trains will feature amenities focused on comfort and accessibility, including open interior spaces and designated areas for wheelchair users or passengers with strollers. They will be equipped with an advanced propulsion system, smart climate controls, and technologies designed to minimize environmental impact, the company notes.

The entire manufacturing process will take place in Canada, according to Alstom. The design and development of the trains will be carried out within the country, while the final assembly will occur at the group's facility in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Testing of the new subways will be conducted in Kingston, also in Ontario. The manufacturer plans to use Canadian-sourced steel and aluminum and rely on its network of local suppliers for this project. According to the statement, this order is expected to generate up to 945 direct jobs in Canada, including more than 600 at Alstom. Additionally, the company estimates that over 1,700 indirect jobs could be created to support the implementation of the project. The financing of the operation is a collaborative effort involving the Canadian federal government, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Toronto, the company specifies.

Financial Impact and Broader Context

This order was recorded in Alstom's results for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2025-2026, according to the statement. It is one of three contracts mentioned in a note to investors published on January 5, 2026, totaling approximately €2.5 billion. The company highlights that more than 35,000 Alstom subway cars have been ordered or are already in service across more than 70 urban areas in 40 different countries. Alstom currently employs over 5,000 people in Canada and positions itself as the country's sole rolling stock manufacturer. The French manufacturer reported a revenue of €18.5 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, according to the provided information.
