Arkema receives SBTi validation for a net-zero target by 2050, a first in the chemicals sector
Having already achieved its 2030 climate targets, Arkema stated in a press release published on November 3, 2026, that SBTi Services has validated a new set of targets, including a net-zero objective by 2050. The chemicals company presents itself as the first company validated under the new SBTi framework dedicated to the chemicals sector.
A 58.07% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions targeted by 2035
By 2050, the net-zero target covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and provides for a 90% reduction in absolute emissions compared with 2019. The group states that it will prioritize reducing its emissions and will only resort to neutralization for the remaining 10% of emissions, in line with SBTi criteria.
For 2035, Arkema commits to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 58.07% compared with 2019, in line with a 1.5 °C trajectory and the Paris Agreement. Scope 3 is the subject of a separate target: a 68.57% reduction on the same baseline.
The Scope 1 and 2 objective is broken down into two targets. The first provides for a 22.39% reduction in Scope 1 emissions linked to the production of non-primary chemical products, which covers all of the group's production activities. The second aims for a 78.44% reduction in all other Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Up to €400 million in investments planned for 2022–2035
This climate plan is supported by an investment envelope of up to €400 million cumulatively over the 2022–2035 period, intended in particular to finance process improvement and energy efficiency projects. Arkema also indicates that it will continue the transition of its energy mix toward low-carbon sources.
For Scope 3, the group plans to gradually reduce its most emissions-intensive activities in favor of less carbon-intensive alternatives and to secure the commitment of its suppliers to their own decarbonization efforts. According to Emmanuelle Bromet, Sustainability Director, this validation “marks an important new step in our climate trajectory.”
