AXA share declines nearly 2% and falls below its moving averages
The Paris-based insurer is losing ground this Tuesday as the CAC 40 also trades in negative territory, in a market context marked by the prospect of a European Central Bank rate hike on Thursday. Pressure is being exerted on financial stocks as inflation expectations rise, driven by Brent crude approaching 100 dollars and eurozone inflation returning above 3% in August.
AXA falls below its two short-term moving averages in a jittery market
AXA is down 1.72% to €43.40 during the session, deepening its monthly decline to 3.66% while the CAC 40 is down 0.46% over the same period. The stock is now below its 20-day moving average at €44.08 (gap of 1.54%) and below its 50-day moving average at €44.34 (gap of 2.12%), two downside threshold crossings that reflect a deterioration in short-term momentum. However, the 200-day moving average at €40.98 remains well below the current price, offering a cushion of nearly 6%.
The support level at €42.92 constitutes the key level to monitor in case of a continued decline, while the RSI at 51 remains in neutral territory, without any particular signal of seller exhaustion. Monthly volatility, at 5.14%, remains moderate for a financial stock of this size.
The Investor Day on September 15 in focus, in a rate environment favorable to the insurer
Today's movement reflects a contrasting sectoral context for insurance. On one hand, the prospect of a 25 basis point rate hike by the ECB on Thursday, which would bring the deposit rate to 2.5%, historically tends to support life insurance margins through better valuation of bond investments. The 3-month Euribor stood at 2.513% on August 1, up 0.48 points year-over-year. On the other hand, persistent inflation above 3% is increasing claims in property and casualty insurance.
When publishing H1 2026 results (on July 31, 2026), AXA stated it was on track to achieve the objectives of its "Unlock the Future" plan. Furthermore, the partnership signed this morning with Publicis Sapient to deploy AI agents across the group aims to accelerate the group's operational transformation, with no immediate impact on the share price. The next scheduled milestone is the Investor Day on September 15, which could provide clarification on the group's medium-term objectives.
