Eutelsat Partners with MEO to Deploy OneWeb Connectivity in Portugal
Eutelsat has concluded a partnership agreement with MEO, Portugal's leading telecommunications operator, to integrate its low-earth orbit (LEO) connectivity into the Portuguese operator's offering.
The agreement aims to combine satellite, fiber optic and 5G technology to serve businesses, government administrations and critical infrastructure operators in the country.
Integration of OneWeb Services into MEO's Offering
On September 23, 2026, Eutelsat announced the signing of a new partnership agreement with MEO, covering the deployment of OneWeb low-earth orbit connectivity services from Eutelsat in Portugal.
Under this agreement, MEO will integrate Eutelsat's OneWeb LEO services into its connectivity offering, combining satellite, fiber optic and 5G technologies.
This offering is aimed at businesses, public administrations, local authorities and critical infrastructure operators throughout the country, with a view to providing resilient backup connectivity.
A Long-Established Infrastructure Partnership
The agreement is a continuation of a long-standing partnership in the field of infrastructure. MEO has hosted Eutelsat's ground infrastructure for several years, originally for its GEO fleet, and now for its OneWeb low-earth orbit constellation.
The two operators indicate they are working together to ensure service continuity and maintain operational security at both sites. According to Eutelsat, the deployment of LEO services enables the group to strengthen its presence in the Portuguese market and offer its LEO service to a wider range of customers across the country.
Statements from Leaders on European Sovereignty
Jean-François Fallacher, Chief Executive Officer of Eutelsat, stated that the agreement enables the extension of LEO service offerings to Portugal and broadens access to the OneWeb network, in response to the need for Europe to strengthen its sovereignty in critical connectivity.
Ana Figueiredo, Chief Executive Officer of MEO, indicated that she decided to combine fiber and 5G networks with Eutelsat's satellite connectivity in order to have a multi-layer communications architecture capable of addressing critical situations.
