Lleida.net: SMS traffic up 40% in Spain thanks to sender registry
In a press release published on October 6, 2026, Lleida.net indicated that the obligation to register SMS senders in Spain had enabled it to measure its market share. The company estimates this share between 20% and 25% of so-called "quality" SMS traffic in Spain. Spain is the primary destination for Lleida.net's SMS traffic.
A CNMC registry filtering senders since September 15
SMS traffic routed by Lleida.net to Spanish operators has increased by 40% since January, a rise that the company attributes to the mandatory registration of senders. According to the press release, growth accelerated in the early stages of the regulation, and intensified further after its full entry into force on September 15. Since that date, telecommunications operators must block SMS, MMS and RCS messages where the sender displays a commercial name or alias not registered in the CNMC alias registry, or which transit through an unauthorized service provider in this registry. The scheme stems from CNMC order TDF/149/2025 and circular 1/2026. Its objective is to curb "smishing," an SMS fraud scheme involving impersonation of banks, companies or public administrations. The so-called "quality" traffic targeted by the market share estimate is transactional traffic, non-advertising, composed notably of two-factor verification codes and notifications.
A redirection of flows toward authorized service providers
Lleida.net is a telecommunications operator with its own numbering assigned by the CNMC and can therefore allocate numbers to its clients. According to the company, the implementation of the registry leads to directing traffic from major messaging platforms toward authorized service providers. The registry has also increased the activity of its existing clients, who have stepped up their traffic with Lleida.net after registering their senders. "For years, anyone could impersonate a bank or public administration on a mobile phone screen. Requiring that each sender be identified restores trust in a channel that millions of people use every day, and rewards companies that operate legitimately," said Sisco Sapena, chief executive officer and founder of Lleida.net. Founded in 1995, the company offers certified notification services, electronic contracting and digital signature solutions. It states that it holds more than 300 patents in more than 60 countries and is listed on BME Growth (Madrid) and Euronext Growth (Paris), as well as in Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
