Mexedia Bets on an Energy and Connectivity Alliance in the Face of the Italian Free Market
In a press release published on 4 November 2026, Mexedia relayed the analysis of its 51%-owned subsidiary Stantup Service on independent energy resellers in Italy since the end of regulated tariffs. The group outlined a direction: bringing together energy supply and connectivity, a field it considers consistent with its scope.
A Customer Base to Be Won Back Every Year for Small Resellers
With the end of the "maggior tutela" (the regulated-tariff offer intended for households) for non-vulnerable residential customers, millions of Italian families had to choose their supplier for the first time. According to the 2026 annual report of ARERA, the Italian energy regulatory authority, 20.8% of residential customers changed supplier in 2025.
In the same year, residential withdrawal points served on the free market reached approximately 24.3 million, or 79.7% of the total. The number of active suppliers rose to 769, including 710 on the free market, reversing the decline that began in 2022.
Large operators absorb this mobility within extensive financial and commercial structures. Independent small resellers, by contrast, must win back a significant share of their customer base each year, again bearing acquisition costs before the margin on previous contracts has amortised the initial investment.
Stantup Advocates the Integration of Energy and Connectivity
Stantup, which has supported the launch of more than seventy independent resellers over ten years, traces the origin of the phenomenon to a business model that has "remained single-product in a market that no longer is". "A reseller that offers only energy gives the customer only one reason to stay: price," states Giuseppe Dell'Acqua Brunone.
According to the subsidiary's experience, combining energy and connectivity, services that share the same customer, the same home and often the same bill, produces three effects: fewer terminations, greater value for each commercial relationship and a competitive ground where direct price comparison loses its importance.
For Mexedia, a holding company active in telecommunications and digital services, value is shifting from isolated supply to the quality and breadth of the customer relationship. Paolo Bona sees in Stantup's experience "valuable knowledge capital for understanding this transformation".
