Syensqo: Third-Quarter Revenue Up 11.4%, EBITDA Margin Down
On November 5, 2026, Syensqo reported third-quarter net revenue of €1.59 billion, up 11.4% year on year and 8.9% organically. Its underlying EBITDA, however, remained stable at €320 million, causing the underlying EBITDA margin to fall by 2.3 points to 20.1%.
Quarterly sales exceeded the consensus estimate of €1.51 billion, set by a single analyst. The specialty chemicals company also confirmed its annual underlying EBITDA target and updated its guidance for operating cash flow and capital expenditure.
Volumes Rise, Underlying EBITDA Margin Down 2.3 Points
The quarter's growth was driven first by volumes, up 7% year on year, complemented by an overall price effect of 2%. Gross margin in value rose 6.6% to €502 million, more slowly than sales: the gross margin rate fell 1.4 points to 31.6%.
The group attributes this decline to rising raw material costs and the higher share of Composite Materials in the Materials segment's sales.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Radossich also cited the timing of price adjustments: “These factors weighed on gross margin during the quarter, and we remain committed to mitigating their impact in order to support profitable growth.”
Underlying EBITDA, stable on a reported basis and down 1.4% organically, also reflects higher provisions for variable compensation. Compared with the second quarter, the gross margin rate fell 2.4 points, while the underlying EBITDA margin rose 0.1 point to 20.1%.
Materials Drives Growth, Performance & Care Improves Its Margin
The Materials segment posted a 13% year-on-year increase in revenue. Composite Materials grew 27% and Specialty Polymers 6%, an activity that management says was supported by demand in semiconductors and batteries.
Quarter on quarter, sales rose 2.3%, mainly thanks to Composite Materials and Technology Solutions. Underlying EBITDA increased 2.9% on the same basis, driven by Specialty Polymers and Novecare, and underlying net income attributable to shareholders rose 3% to €109 million.
The Performance & Care segment improved its margin by 1 point year on year. Its strategic review is ongoing and, according to the Chief Executive Officer, several parties have expressed interest.
Nine-Month Underlying EBITDA Declines, Annual Target Confirmed
The quarter reverses the trend of the year-to-date figures: over nine months, revenue rose only 2.5% to €4.54 billion (+4.0% organically). Cumulative underlying EBITDA fell 7.4% to €882 million, and its margin lost 2.1 points to 19.4%. Return on capital employed (ROCE) over twelve rolling months fell 1.1 points to 5.3%.
Operating cash flow for the quarter fell 14.2% year on year to €284 million, mainly due to the absence of the €92 million indemnity received a year earlier in connection with a dispute before the ICC International Court of Arbitration. It more than doubled (+116.8%) compared with the second quarter, and investments fell 25% to €107 million.
For 2026, Syensqo maintains its underlying EBITDA target of at least €1.1 billion, raised to that level when it published its second-quarter results on July 30, 2026. Operating cash flow is now expected to be at least €700 million, versus approximately €700 million previously, and investments below €450 million, with part of the spending deferred to 2027.
For the fourth quarter, the group anticipates a volume increase between the middle and the top of the single-digit range, mainly driven by Materials. Volume growth thus remains the displayed driver, while the rise in raw material costs weighed on third-quarter gross margin.
