Société Générale stock breaks through its 74.55 € support and loses 6% in one week
The bank headquartered in La Défense is experiencing a sharp decline in trading this Thursday, in a Paris market itself oriented downward. The stock breached a key technical threshold on the downside during the morning session, aggravating a correction movement initiated since the multi-year peak reached in early August.
The downside breach of a technical support that amplifies the correction from August peaks
The Société Générale share is down 3.16% to 72.40 € in trading, while the CAC 40 declines 0.95%. The stock broke through its 74.55 € support on the downside and remains below it, a sign that the short-term correction is intensifying. Over the week, the decline reaches 6%, extending a monthly decline of similar magnitude (-6.18%) that erases part of the gains accumulated since the peak recorded in early August. At this stage, the price is trading significantly below the 20-day moving average at 80.68 € (gap of 10.26%) and the 50-day moving average at 78.14 € (gap of 7.35%), which illustrates the magnitude of the correction from recent peaks.
Only the 200-day moving average, at 70.61 €, remains below the current price, offering a medium-term floor to monitor. The RSI at 32 reflects marked selling pressure, close to an oversold configuration, without clearly crossing that threshold. Monthly volatility stands at 9.92%, consistent with the magnitude of movements observed in recent weeks on this value.
On Wednesday, August 26, Alphavalue maintained its reduce rating on the stock while slightly lowering its price target from 82.60 € to 81.90 €. This represents upside potential of approximately 13% compared to the current price, but the brokerage house's negative view reflects persistent caution despite recent fundamentals. Indeed, the first-half 2026 results, published on July 30, had made an impression: record net profit of 3.5 billion euros, up 13.9%, accompanied by a raise in annual targets, an interim dividend up 23% and a share buyback program of 1.5 billion euros launched in early August. The 2026 ROTE target had then been raised to approximately 11%.
On the valuation front, according to the consensus of surveyed analysts, the stock is trading around 9.1 times expected earnings for the current fiscal year and 8.0 times those of the following fiscal year, with projected earnings per share growth of 13.2% from one fiscal year to the next. In a context where the 3-month Euribor stands at 2.425% (up 0.40 percentage points over a year), the interest rate trajectory remains a structural parameter for the group's interest income, whose activities remain historically sensitive to the level of ECB key rates. The next stage for the stock will be to confirm whether the 200-day moving average at 70.61 € constitutes a solid floor in the event of a continued decline.
