EssilorLuxottica Stock at Lowest Level Since 2022, RSI in Oversold Territory at 26
EssilorLuxottica breaks a new record low on Friday unseen since 2022, deepening its decline in an already downward-trending CAC 40. The stock now trades at nearly half its value erased over one year, in a context of rising rates from major central banks that weighs on consumer discretionary stocks.
A Four-Year Low Breached in a Market Under Rate Pressure
EssilorLuxottica touched 138.70 € during trading on Friday, crushing the previous low of 138.85 € set in 2022, the year of the Ukraine war and sharp rate hikes. The stock declined 1.2% compared to Thursday's close at 141.45 €, bringing the one-year loss to nearly 48%. Over one month, the decline reaches 12.55%, reflecting a deterioration that has accelerated throughout the summer.
This new historic low occurs as the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate today to 1.25%, the highest level since 1995, and the Fed initiated its own rate hike this week. This context of coordinated central bank tightening intensifies pressure on valuation multiples for discretionary consumer stocks, a category to which the Franco-Italian optician belongs. The CAC 40 declines 0.76% during trading, but EssilorLuxottica underperforms the index with a 1.2% decline.
Solid Fundamentals, But Moving Averages Have Become Distant Resistance Levels
In terms of results, the group had published on July 28, 2026 a first half deemed solid, with adjusted operating income up 15% at constant exchange rates and free cash flow of 1.07 billion euros, up 100 million euros. Management had expressed confidence at the time, citing growth "near double-digit" and a better position than ever to accelerate the next phase of development. However, these fundamentals are insufficient to halt the stock's decline, which the technical configuration illustrates unequivocally: the stock trades at 139.75 € during the session, or 8.95% below its 20-day moving average at 153.49 €, and 13.5% below its 50-day moving average at 161.57 €. The 200-day moving average, at 203.71 €, is now more than 31% above the current price, a gap that signals the magnitude of the slippage accumulated over several months.
The RSI at 26 indicates a clear oversold configuration, extending the one already observed during last week's decline. The nearest resistance is located at 172.30 €, or more than 23% above the current price, which measures the distance to travel before any return to structural upward momentum. The analysts' consensus will need to be monitored following this further deterioration in the stock price.
