Valneva stock declines nearly 3%, lagging the SBF 120
The Lyon-based laboratory is retreating during the session while the SBF 120 remains nearly stable, hovering around equilibrium. The decline occurs amid renewed selling pressure following August, which had nonetheless seen the stock gain more than 25%.
A decline of nearly 3% that contrasts with a remarkable August
Valneva loses 2.86% to €2.72 during the session, after a previous close of €2.80, ranking among the sharpest declines on the SBF 120. This pullback occurs in a broadly stable European market: the CAC 40 and SBF 120 each advance approximately 0.1% during the session. Today's correction contrasts sharply with the stock's monthly performance, which still displays over 25% gains in one month, one of the index's strongest performances over this period. Over one week, however, the stock loses 8.43%, a sign that momentum has reversed over the past few days.
The VIX, an indicator of volatility in American markets, rises 4.82% to 15.21, signaling a slight uptick in global uncertainty without revealing major stress. Regarding short positions, three funds collectively hold 2.80% of the capital sold short, according to the filings reviewed. This figure is down 0.68 percentage points over thirty days (it was 3.48% at the beginning of the period), reflecting a gradual reduction in institutional bearish bets on the stock. This level remains moderate and its partial decline reveals nothing about the future intentions of market participants.
A stock above its short-term moving averages, amid recent regulatory developments
Despite today's decline, the technical picture remains globally positive in the short term. The price of €2.72 holds above the MA20 at €2.64 (spread of +2.88%) and well above the MA50 at €2.39 (+13.64%). The MA200 at €3.20, however, remains 15.12% above the current price, illustrating the extent of the distance to be covered to return to the long-term trend. The RSI at 61 points to a slightly stretched configuration but without a clear overbought signal, and the MACD displays a slightly negative histogram (-0.0017), indicating that upward momentum is losing steam without reversing sharply.
The resistance level at €3.07 constitutes the next ceiling, while support at €2.08 remains far below. On the fundamental side, the laboratory had published its first-half results on August 13, 2026, showing a widened net loss and a decline in product sales, although management had confirmed its annual targets. More recently, the European Medicines Agency agreed to examine the marketing authorization application for the Lyme disease vaccine candidate, developed in partnership with Pfizer, a regulatory milestone whose outcome will partly determine the group's growth profile. The €3.07 resistance remains the next key level to watch in gauging the stock's ability to extend its monthly rebound.
