Airbus and Kawasaki Partner to Adapt Eurodrone for Japanese Maritime Defense
On Friday, Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to explore adapting an antisubmarine variant of the Eurodrone to meet the needs of Japanese maritime defense. This collaboration initiates discussions on the design, development, and commercialization of a Japanese version of the European drone.
The U950 Eurodrone, the first major European long-endurance remotely piloted aerial system, offers capabilities particularly relevant for Japan. This device, currently under development, can remain airborne for up to 40 hours with a payload (excluding fuel) of 2.3 tons, allowing it to carry sonobuoys and torpedoes for antisubmarine warfare missions. The European program, led by OCCAR and involving Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, is scheduled for its first flight in 2029.

Japan has had observer status within the Eurodrone program since 2023, setting the stage for this enhanced collaboration. The framework agreement signed on Friday aims to explore configuration options, the integration of Japanese sensors and effectors, as well as the potential participation of the Japanese industry in the production and maintenance of the platform. The goal is to ensure that Japan can operate the Eurodrone autonomously and without restrictions.
Mutual Benefits for European Naval Variants
Airbus anticipates that the developments specific to the Japanese maritime variant will bring substantial operational and logistical benefits to future European naval versions of the Eurodrone. This collaboration also strengthens the strategic framework of defense initiatives between Europe and Japan. The Eurodrone already covers a diverse portfolio of missions including aerial intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance, as well as early warning, electromagnetic origin intelligence, and maritime patrol.
