Michelin launches I-TireLab, a €4.5 million joint laboratory with the CNRS and two universities
The Clermont-Ferrand-based group has partnered with the University of Poitiers, Université Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble INP - UGA and the CNRS in a structure with an overall investment of approximately €4.5 million over four years, according to a press release published on November 4, 2026.
This laboratory makes permanent a cooperation launched several years ago. Its objective, according to the partners, is to “transform data into knowledge, then into decisions and actions”.
Four areas, from real-time tire wear to rubber manufacturing
The first area aims to better understand the condition of tires while driving. The teams are notably seeking to estimate their wear and grip in real time using sensors already fitted to mass-produced vehicles, without any additional specialized equipment.
The second area involves integrating this information into the systems that control the vehicle. Research focuses in particular on adapting braking to the condition of the tires and the available grip, in order to improve the vehicle’s stability and efficiency.
The third area concerns rubber manufacturing, with simulation and control tools designed to maintain constant quality while limiting material losses and energy consumption. The fourth explores the use of flexible elements to modify the flow of air or water around an object.

Michelin contributes its knowledge of usage, its data, and its testing and deployment resources. The LIAS (University of Poitiers) and the GIPSA-lab (UGA, CNRS, Grenoble INP - UGA) bring their expertise in modeling, state estimation of systems, and the design of control methods.
Demonstrators and tests on the partners’ facilities are expected to evaluate these methods under conditions close to real-world ones, with a view to their “possible integration into future Michelin innovation projects”. The work could contribute to Michelin Touch Intelligence, the digital twin of the tire presented in May 2026.
Research on certain flexible composites could also feed into Wisamo, the inflatable wing developed by Michelin to supplement ship propulsion, the first sail of which is currently being delivered. For Philippe Jacquin, manager and Research & Development Director at Michelin, I-TireLab “must enable us to transform science into concrete innovations”.
